The absent-minded Lain is stuck in a world of modernization. At a rapid pace the world gets consumed by the internet (also known as the “wired”), and sometimes there does not even seem to be a difference between real-life and the “ wired”. The moment a student jumps off a building triggers a chain reaction, and eventually Lain, who was always reluctant to use computers, suddenly gets pulled in the wired. Soon she notices that a lot has been going on in the wired, and that apparently God also lives in the wired…

Serial Experiments Lain has been one of the mind-breaking animes that I know. Not only because Serial Experiments Lain was so ingeniously presented, with illusion-like images (shadows as mirrors to another world) but also because it was so contemporary. Using the current modernization and importance of the internet to show a shifted world, with a lot of oddities to solve for the viewer. Serial Experiments Lain is an incredibly good contemporary surrealistic sci-fi thriller and is mainly aimed at the people who like animes which mess with your mind.
