Synopsis
The anime focuses on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, where all the action is concentrated in the mountain passes and never in cities nor urban areas, and the drift racing style is emphasized in particular. Set in the late 1990s in Japan's Gunma Prefecture, the series follows the adventures of Takumi Fujiwara, an eighteen year old who helps his father run a tofu shop by making deliveries every morning to a hotel on Akina with his father's Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX. It is revealed that Takumi has been driving on Mt. Akina every morning to deliver tofu to the summit five years before he even had his license. As a result his skills in mountain racing were honed, and is able to drive under adverse weather conditions.

One of my first anime's and i loved it. It's got amazing racing all about the exciting world of drifting. Whether your into racing or not its great! Comedy and drama help the plot progress as new intuitive characters emerge and grow.

Long enough to get you hooked and never want it to end. It's also got some great heartpumping music that fits great with the battles. Environment is constantly varied and spices things up.

Animation may be strange to some at first since the vehicles are so different for the characters.

I recommend it to anyone and everyone who considers themselves a fan of anime. Best racing ever!

Characters
Takumi Fujiwara
He rarely shows emotion. As a result of constant everyday practice and over 5 years of experience on Akina, Takumi is able to adapt to nearly any situation that presents itself during a race with astonishing speed. One factor in his nearly unparalleled driving skill is his ability to visualize the road in his head, thus making up for the lack of visibility no matter how dark the mountain pass may be. He is an instinctive rather than an intellectual driver.


Bunta Fujiwara
Bunta Fujiwara is the owner of a tofu shop in Akina, and the father of Takumi. He used to be the No.1 downhill racer in Mt. Akina years ago, but he no longer races, preferring to guide Takumi's racing development. He is the original driver of the mysterious "white ghost of Akina" AE86 Sprinter Trueno that holds the record of the fastest downhill time at Akina.


Natsuki Mogi
Takumi's love interest. Before she hooked up with Takumi, she engaged in enjo kosai to make some extra money. In the movie, it appears that she was engaged in prostitution or sugar-daddy kind of relationship with a middle aged man driving a white Mercedes.
