The story follows Chii and Hideki in many amusing escapades while Chii absorbs the world around her and Hideki begins to learn about her mysterious past. Chii is exceedingly attractive and much of the humor is derived from her innocence and naiveté coupled with Hideki’s overactive hormones and vivid imagination. Some people may find her adorable and endearingly cute personality annoying, but it seems to fit with who she is and her ultimate destiny.
Chii and Hideki begin to haltingly develop feelings for each other, and halfway through the series takes a more serious, introspective tone. At the heart of the story is the question: Do human-to-human relationships suffer if people are infatuated with technology?
There are noticeable animation shortcuts taken at times, and there is one episode that essentially recycles scenes from previous episodes in a sort of reminiscence. Backgrounds are sometimes replaced by bright graphics or words in English that succeed in heightening the moment, mostly for laughs.
Chobits is funny and entertaining, and while it has its share of ecchi moments and fan service, it’s basically a classic love story. After seeing Chobits, you’ll never look at your PC in the same way again.
